Film

This guide introduces researchers to the collections held by the University of Melbourne Archives (UMA) that relate to the social and political impact of film culture. The UMA holds the records of significant figures in the Australian film industry, associations, societies and history of the Melbourne University Film Society (MUFS).

The Melbourne University Film Society (MUFS) collection comprises of film journals, correspondence between Australian and international institutions, financial accounts, photographs, material from distributors/newspaper cuttings, proposals, programmes/posters and cassettes. A wide range of material, from MUFS inception in the 1940s to its many evolutions since have revealed a distinctly student-driven association that shaped the Australian film movement in the 20th century.

From its inception, MUFS established significant structural and operational frameworks, paving the way for a uniquely Australian approach to institutional collaboration, programming and production.
