If referencing a figure and not including it in the body of the work or the appendices:

Format for reference list

Elements, punctuation and capitalisation

You should include the source of the figure or table in your reference list.  See  the relevant examples for book, website  etc.

Style notes

  • Always place the figure or image title/caption below the figure or image.
  • Figures and images, and the captions should be centred
  • All first citations of figures must be in numerical order.
  • Citations to figures in text always carry the abbreviation “Fig.” followed by the figure number. Example: Fig. 3.
  • Always refer to the singular Fig. (never Figs.) If you are referencing multiple parts they will written as Fig. 3(a) and Fig. 3(b)
  • Always place the figure title/caption below the figure.
  • Titles and captions will need to be centred under the figure.
  • The first word of the caption should always be capitalized.
  • Do not use A, An, or The at the beginning of a figure or table caption.
  • You will need to indicate if you adapt, amend or modify the figure at the end of the caption.
  • Use the source citation e.g. journal article, for reference list format
  • Use the same citation number (example: Lee [3]..., ...[3, Fig. 4]) if citing from the same source.
  • Images should be treated as figures. Follow the rules above.
