Scope and purpose of the Journal Open Pathways Explorer

The Journal Open Pathways Explorer (JOPE) is designed to provide researchers and research support staff with information on open access publishing options. It brings together information on:

  • Journals included in our open access publishing agreements.
  • Journals eligible for an Article Processing Charge (APC) discount.
  • Cap projections for journals subject to agreements with annual publishing caps.
  • Fully open access journals that are not included in our open access agreements. These may or may not attract an Article Processing Charge (APC).

It also includes:

  • Links directly to journal information, when available in our data sources.
  • Links to details, including eligibility information, on our open access publishing agreements and APC discounts.
  • Information on previous publishing by University of Melbourne authors.

JOPE replaces the All Covered Titles and APC Discounts spreadsheets available from the Open Access Publishing page. These lists will be updated as required until the end of 2026 and will be decommissioned on 4 January 2027.

Data for this tool is sourced from:

  • The Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) Read and Publish agreements Title List.
  • Manual entry for Read and Publish agreements directly negotiated with publishers (known as ‘non-CAUL agreements’) and journals with APC discounts.
  • The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), a source of fully open access journals and their standard list price APCs.
  • Elements, the University of Melbourne’s research outputs management system (UoM login required).

This tool is intended for University of Melbourne authors. It reflects the University of Melbourne's agreements with publishers and other journals with open access pathways. It is not intended to be a definitive resource for journal selection. Refer to the Scholarly Publishing guide for more information.

Tips for using the the tool

Navigation

The Journal Open Pathways Explorer has three main components:

  1. Landing page: Enter your search terms here. You can search by journal title, publisher, keywords, or choose to browse all journals.
  2. Search Results page: Displays journal titles matching your search parameters. You can sort or filter your results and modify your search here. You can also export your results to a separate file.
  3. Journal Details page: Comprehensive information on the selected journal title, including agreement eligibility, details of any Article Processing Charges (APCs), data sources, and links to additional information.

Searching

You can search the tool from both the Landing page and the Search Results page. You can search by journal title or publisher name, or enter keywords.

As you enter your search terms, suggested journal titles will appear that match your search query. You may select a suggested title or, for a broader search, click the search button (or hit the Enter key).

You can modify your search query or initiate a new search directly from the Search Results page using the search box at the top of the screen.

Filtering, refining, and sorting results

Filtering and refining options appear on the Search Results screen, allowing you to refine your results list to better match your needs.

Select your filter or refining options and click on Apply Filters at the bottom. To clear your filters, click Clear.

An option to Browse all Journals is available on the Landing page. This will return a full list of all journals in JOPE that you can filter and refine.

Exporting results

Once you have a list of results, you may export them to a CSV file for easy reference. Click the Export CSV button underneath the search bar. This will export a file you can open in Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet application.

Note that exported files are static records and will not be updated when JOPE receives updates. Please re-check the live tool for the latest information.

Terminology

You can find a list of commonly used terms and their definitions on our Open Scholarship Definitions page.
