The Baillieu Library's collections support teaching and research in the arts, humanities and social sciences for undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and researchers.

Our book collections are arranged by Dewey Decimal Classification.

High Use Collection, Ground floor

Catalogue location: UniM Bail High Use

The High Use Collection contains prescribed texts and recommended reading materials which can be borrowed either for two hours or overnight by University of Melbourne staff and students. The collection is open access - please check out your books before leaving the High Use Room. Please note: there is a borrowing limit of 2 two-hour loan items at a time.

This room also contains the hold shelves, where requested books, including interlibrary loans are held for pick-up. These are filed alphabetically by the requester's surname and should be checked out before leaving the room.

Reference Collection, Ground floor

Catalogue location: UniM Bail REF

Containing resources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories and handbooks, the Reference Collection is for use within the library and cannot be borrowed. However, many reference resources are now available online.

Special Collections (including Rare Books, Rare Music & Prints), 3rd floor

Catalogue location: UniM Bail SpC

Consisting of books, journals, pamphlets, and archival material, this collection is 'closed access' because of the age, value or uniqueness of an item and to ensure their long-term care and preservation for the future. Items can be pre-requested using this online form; you will then be able to consult requested items in the Reading Room, 3rd floor, Baillieu Library.

We collect the historical records of the University, Victorian business, trade unions and other labour organisations, community and cultural organisations and the personal papers of individuals within them. Items can be pre-requested using this online form for viewing in the Reading Room, 3rd floor, Baillieu Library.
