Key 37: Education (ii) 1903; 1919; 1922-3

The Fink Royal Commission into University affairs recommended the creation of a chair of pedagogy and the institution of a degree course in education which would be the goal of all government teachers. A Diploma of Education was available from 1903, when the first lecturer in pedagogy, John Smyth, was appointed. In 1919 Smyth was appointed foundation professor of Education, while retaining the role of principal of the Melbourne Teacher Training College.

This dual role continued until early 1939. The Faculty of Education was set up in 1922-3. A Master of Education was available from 1924, and a Bachelor degree from 1936.
