  • A DOI is a string of numbers and letters that typically begins with the number 10 (fig. 5.89). They are permanently assigned to a source by a publisher.  If the DOI is not preceded by http:// or https:// in your source, precede the DOI in your entry with the following: https://doi.org/
  • Doing so will allow others to call up the source in a browser window (5.93).
  • For online works, the location, in order of preference, is the DOI, permalink, or URL (5.84).
  • Even if you initially access a work through a URL, when the publisher indicates (typically on the landing page of the work) that a DOI or permalink is associated with the work, list it in your entry instead (figs. 5.87, 5.88).
  • Issues of scholarly journals are written as “vol. 64, no. 1” rather than “64.1” (5.77-5.79).
  • Provide the most specific date in your source. If your source uses day, month and/or year, include all (5.77).
