Personal communication may include (but is not limited to) email, fax, interview, conversations, direct or private messages via social media, telephone conversations and letters.

Format for footnotes

Elements, punctuation & capitalisation

22. Name of interviewee, interviewed by interviewer's name, place, date of interview.

Footnote example

First entry:

22. Kate Kelly, interviewed by Julianne Summer, Melbourne, September 22, 2017.

Second and subsequent entries:

26. Kelly, interview.

OR

First entry:

12. Interview with social worker, July 23, 2018.

Second and subsequent entries:

13. Interview with social worker.



Format for bibliography

Elements, punctuation & capitalisation

Unpublished interviews are not usually referred to in the bibliography, however can be included if they are critical to your argument or are cited frequently. Check with your lecturer if you are unsure.

Name of interviewee (Surname, first name). Interview by interviewer's name. Place, date of interview.

Kelly, Kate. Interviewed by Julianne Summer. Melbourne, September 22, 2017.



Style notes for this reference style

  • See Manual 14.211.
  • Unpublished interviews are usually run in to the text (i.e 'In an interview with the author on September 15, 2011, Kate Kelly stated that...') or given in a footnote.
  • You may include other identifying information (i.e. position or organisation) if relevant.
  • Unpublished interviews are not usually referred to in the bibliography, however can be included if they are critical to your argument or are cited frequently. Check with your lecturer if you are unsure.
  • For published or broadcast interviews, either in print or online, use the relevant citation style for the format (see Manual 14.213).
  • Email addresses should not be published unless necessary for the argument and express permission is granted by the owner.
  • It is recommended you obtain the permission of the person who is communicating the information.
  • If there is any additional contextual information that is significant to this communication, please include it in the citation.
