Bibliography

Bibliography template

Newspapers are more commonly cited in notes than in bibliographies. Newspaper items need not be listed in the bibliography if these have been documented in the text. If a bibliography entry were included it would appear as follows:

Title of Newspaper. "Title of Article." Date. URL (if consulted online).

Bibliography example

Horsham Times. "Young People's Creative Work." January 13, 1950. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/72799062.

Tips for this reference type

  • See Manual 14.89 and Manual 14.97.
  • Newspaper titles are included instead of the author name in bibliography entries.
  • Newspaper titles are italicised.
  • Article titles are included in quotation marks.
  • If there is no article title, include the article type without quotation marks. For example: Editorial. or Obituary for John Smith.
  • In circumstances where new stories are unfolding over time (e.g. live updates online), it may be appropriate to include a time-stamp where one is included with the article. List the time as posted, with the time zone as appropriate (i.e. 3:55 pm EST).
  • A period in the middle of a newspaper headline may be changed to a colon (14.90).
  • Omit the initial The for English language newspaper titles (14.91).
  • Add a city name in brackets if the newspaper is not well known e.g. Examiner (Launceston).
  • You may include the specific edition in your footnotes or bibliography entries if relevant. e.g. final edition; afternoon edition.
  • If the paper is published in several sections, the section number or name may be given.
  • Page numbers are not required
