In-text citation style notes

  • For major reference works with a large number of editors, use the name of the lead editor followed by et al. and, in parentheses, the year.
  • If pages are being directly referenced in the text, include the page number/s in the in-text citation after the year.
  • In the text, for a work with three or more editors, include the name of only the first editor plus "et al." in every in-text citation, including the first citation, unless doing so would create ambiguity.

Reference list style notes

APA 7 Publication Manual, pp. 285-289, 322

  • Book titles are italicised.
  • Use the abbreviation (Eds.). for multiple editors.
  • Details about edition, volume number or chapter page range are placed directly after the title in parentheses, with the period after the parentheses, e.g., (2nd ed.). or (Rev. ed.). or (Vol. 26).
  • In the reference list, provide surnames and initials for up to and including 20 editors. When there are two to 20 editors, use an ampersand before the final editor's name.
  • In the reference list, when there are 21 or more editors, include the first 19 editors' names, insert an ellipsis, (no ampersand), and add the final editor's name.
  • Include a DOI for all works that have a DOI, regardless of whether you used the online version or the print version.
