Style notes for the reference type
- Short titles may be given to a treaty, or portion of a treaty (e.g. annex, schedule or appendix) to help with subsequent references. See 8.8.
- Don’t include party names for multilateral treaties with more than three signatories, or for treaties where party names appear in the title. For further guidance on parties’ names refer to 8.2.
- Generally, multilateral treaties will use the date opened for signature whereas ‘closed’ multilateral or treaties between a set number of parties will use the date of conclusions. See 8.3 generally for more specific information on which date to include.
- When conclusion and entry into force dates are the same, these elements can be combined. See 8.3.2. Treaties not yet in force will have this information in the date of entry to force section. See 8.3.3.
- If a treaty is included in a treaty series cite these details rather than the UN document number. Where they are included in multiple treaty series, only one series should be cited – see 8.4 for the preferential order of series.
- The authoritative English version of the treaty should be used. If the only available version is in a foreign language, cite the full title of the treaty in the original language and follow this with a translation in square brackets.
