Style notes for books
- Titles of books should be italicised and should otherwise appear in accordance with AGLC4 Rule 4.2, see examples at AGLC4 Rule 6.2.
- Capitalisation – capitalise all words of the title, except articles (the, a, an), conjunctions (and, but) and prepositions (on, with, before), see AGLC4 Rules 4.2 and 1.7.
- Edition numbers are placed after the publisher name and before the year (within the brackets), see AGLC4 Rule 6.3.2.
- Reverse the first name and surname order in the bibliography for the first named author only, see AGLC4 Rule 1.13.
- For three authors or fewer, use all author names. For more than three authors, use the first author name and ‘et al’, see AGLC4 Rule 4.1.2.
- Electronic books are cited in the same way as print books.
- Subsequent references to secondary sources generally use the author’s surname to help identify the source. When author surnames aren’t suitable, or the author is not a person, short titles can be added to initial references to help with cross referencing. See Rules 1.4 and 1.4.4 for guidance on subsequent references and short titles.
