Create a library

  • Open EndNote

Go to Start button > Programs > EndNote > EndNote Program .

EndNote  can be opened while using Word.  Use the EndNote tab and the Go to EndNote option.
Previous versions of Word have this option on the EndNote toolbar or via the Tools > EndNote > Go to EndNote menu.  Open Office Writer has this option on the EndNote toolbar or via the EndNote > Go to EndNote menu.

    Create a library

For a new library, select File > New. The program will have the name My EndNote Library.enl in the filename box.  It can be changed to any other name by typing in the file name box.  Choose a location to save the library. ( e.g. My Documents\EndNote\). Click Save .

If you have already used EndNote, it will default to opening the previous library you were using.   Use the File > Open menu to select another library, if necessary.

It is best practice to have only one Endnote library. Use groups and tags to organise references. If you have to have more then one library, ensure they are named clearly to differentiate between them.

  • Open EndNote

If the EndNote shortcut is not in the dock at the bottom of your screen:

    1. Open Finder.
    2. Select Applications.
    3. Select EndNote 2025
    4. Select EndNote 2025.app.

    Open Endnote
