Journal coverage

Unlimited open access publishing for University of Melbourne corresponding authors in De Gruyter journals.

From 1 January 2026, our agreement with De Gruyter has expanded to include unlimited open access publishing in:

  • 117 hybrid journals
  • 124 Subscribe to Open journals
  • 74 fully open access (gold) journals

Covered journals are reflected in our 2026 all covered journals spreadsheet. They will also be included in CAUL's 2026 title list.

Eligible authors

To be eligible, the article's corresponding author must, at the time of submission, provide their University of Melbourne affiliation. This must be their first and primary affiliation in the publishing system and in the article itself.

Eligible article types include

  • Research article
  • Review article
  • Reports

Article types excluded from this agreement include, but are not limited to: errata; obituary; book reviews; editorials; letters.

How to use the agreement

When possible, corresponding authors should use their unimelb email address (@unimelb.edu.au or @student.unimelb.edu.au). This email address should be used in the publisher's submission platform and all correspondence. This allows for easy verification of affiliation.

The following workflow summary was provided to CAUL by De Gruyter:

  1. Article is accepted.
  2. Eligible authors are recognized by affiliated email domains (or optionally by Ringgold numbers).
  3. If matched, articles are accepted automatically in Rights Link.
  4. Authors are informed via email notifications about the free open access publication.

More information on De Gruyter’s submission processes can be found on their website. Details can also be found in the De Gruyter agreement's entry on CAUL R&P Guide page.

2025 journal coverage and exclusions

Only journals to which the University currently subscribes are covered, which prior to 2026 was a limited selection of journals. De Gruyter’s fully open access (gold) journals were not covered under the agreement prior to 2026, although an APC discount was available.

2025 related discount

Prior to 2026, when publishing in eligible fully open access (gold) journals, University of Melbourne corresponding authors could receive a 20% APC discount. See "Discounts on open access publishing fees" on the Open Access Publishing page for details.
