Borrowing limits

The number and type of items you can borrow depends on your membership type.

University of Melbourne staff and students

Use your University of Melbourne staff or student card to borrow.

Staff (academic and professional)

Can borrow:

• 2000 items at a time
• General collection items, starting at 90 days
• 7 day, overnight & 3-hour loan items (can only borrow two 3-hour loans at once)
• Media, equipment, kits and scores
• Periodicals from most libraries

Higher degree students (including Masters by Research and PhD candidates)

Can borrow:

• 2000 items at a time
• General collection items, starting at 90 days
• 7 day, overnight & 3-hour loan items (can only borrow two 3-hour loans at once)
• Media, equipment, kits and scores
• Periodicals from most libraries

Undergraduate, Honours and Graduate coursework students

Can borrow:

• 100 items at a time
• General collection items, starting at 90 days
• 7 day, overnight & 3-hour loan items (can only borrow two 3-hour loans at once)
• Media, equipment, kits and scores
• Periodicals from most libraries

Community members (including alumni)

The University of Melbourne is currently transitioning to a new library system. As a result, new Community memberships are temporarily unavailable. We anticipate new Community members will be able to join in late July 2026.

Please check the Memberships page in late July for updates on when Community Memberships will be available.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Use your University of Melbourne library card to borrow.

Current Community members can borrow:

• 30 items at a time
• General collection items, starting at 28 days
• CDs and DVDs, except those on restricted loan periods

Membership excludes other media items, equipment, 7 day, overnight and 3-hour loans, and periodicals.

Borrowers from other universities (CAVAL and ULANZ)

The University of Melbourne is currently transitioning to a new library system. As a result, new Community memberships (including CAVAL and ULANZ) are temporarily unavailable. We anticipate new Community members will be able to join in late July 2026.

Use your University of Melbourne library card to borrow. If you are a CAVAL borrower, you may be able to use your home university staff or student card to borrow, once your account is set up.

Current CAVAL and ULANZ borrowers can borrow:
