Tips for this reference type

  • See Manual 14.89.  Also refer to 14.1 for adapting examples to Chicago B.
  • If the article has multiple authors, see the advice on the About Chicago A page.
  • Newspaper titles are italicised.
  • Article titles are included in quotation marks.
  • If there is no article title, include the article type without quotation marks. For example: Editorial. or Obituary for John Smith.
  • In circumstances where new stories are unfolding over time (e.g. live updates online), it may be appropriate to include a time-stamp where one is included with the article. List the time as posted, with the time zone as appropriate (i.e. 3:55 pm EST).
  • A period in the middle of a newspaper headline may be changed to a colon (14.90).
  • Omit the initial The for English language newspaper titles (14.91).
  • Add a city name in brackets if the newspaper is not well known e.g. Examiner (Launceston).
  • You may include the specific edition in your footnotes or bibliography entries if relevant. e.g. final edition; afternoon edition.
  • If the paper is published in several sections, the section number or name may be given.
  • Page numbers are not required
