Tips for this reference type

A film is a standalone narrative presented in a single feature-length format. Films can be split up into multiple parts or be apart of a movie series.

  • See 14.165 and 14.161.
  • Omit the year of release if it is the same as the year of publication.
  • The order of the citation elements may depend on the nature of the resource and on what the focus of the citation is (i.e. you may cite the director's name first if the direction of the work is your primary focus).
  • The names of networks, channels, streaming services, and the like are set in roman.
  • Any facts relevant to identifying the item should be included (i.e. additional writers, actors, producers).
  • Accompanying material, such as critical commentary and interviews, can either be woven into the text (see Turabian 19.10.3.1) or can by cited in terms of the related content.
  • You may need to consult other resources (i.e a library catalogue, Film Index International or IMDb) for some citation elements.
  • You can also refer to a specific scene in a film. Include the scene title or chapter number in quotation marks at the beginning of the citation (i.e. “Crop Duster Attack,” North by Northwest…).
  • If it is a long url , it is usually acceptable for sources to record the URL for the home page (e.g. https://www.netflix.com/) or the name of the database (Nexflix) in lieu of recording a URL.
  • For recordings accessed online, if there is no date of production or broadcast provided, you should include an access date prior to the URL (Manual 13.15).
