Adding a bibliography

Create a bibliography from a the references cited in your work, or generate one independently.

Add a bibliography to your work

To generate a bibliography place your cursor where you want the bibliography and click the Add/Edit Bibliography button.

All sources cited in your document will be listed.

To add additional sources to your bibliography, click anywhere within your bibliography, click the Add/Edit Bibliography button. Select the references to be added and click the green arrow to add more sources to the right hand column. These will be added to your bibliography.

Create a standalone bibliography from your Zotero library

Use this method when you are creating a bibliography of references not linked to a thesis or essay.

  • Select the references to include from the collections in your Zotero library.
    • If you want all references in a collection, or sub-collection, select these references by using keyboard shortcuts. For Windows: use CTRL + A. For Mac: use CMD + A
    • If you want to select specific references that aren't grouped in a sub-collection,  use these keyboard shortcuts.  Windows: CTRL + click (specific references). For Mac: CMD + click (specific references)
    • To select a list of references that appear one after the other in your library, use these keyboard shortcuts. Windows: Shift + click (first reference, then last reference to be included), Mac: Shift + click (first  reference, than last reference to be included)

References copied to Word for generating independent bibliography.

  • With the references for the bibliography selected,  right-click and select 'Create bibliography from items'.

Right-click in Windows or Command plus click on MAC to Create Bibliography from Items via menu.

  • From the Create Citation/Bibliography window select the required Citation Style from the list
  • Choose the output method:
    • Save as RTF - if you'd like to open these as rich-text at a later stage.
    • Save as HTML - if you'd like to embed the references on a webpage such as a blog post.
    • Copy to clipboard -  to paste the references to a document or other format.

Create a bibliography using Zoterobib (citation generator)

Allows you to create a one off bibliography. Go to https://zbib.org/

  • Add a URL, ISBN, DOI, PMID, arXiv ID, or the title of a journal article or book to automatically generate a reference, or add items manually
    • Note: some references may need editing, depending on the data retrieved and/or the requirements of the citation style you are using
  • Select the referencing style
  • Zoterobib will generate a citation for your bibliography
  • When finished export to RTF, HTML, RIS (for other reference managers), BibTeX or Zotero
