The University of Melbourne Thesis Collection holds archival copies of all Masters by Research and PhD theses completed at the University up to 2017. From 2017 on, only a digital copy of the thesis needs to be submitted and is automatically loaded onto the repository.
Please note: The Library holds VERY LIMITED Honours theses: check the Library catalogue for Rare Books holdings. Honours theses are often held in departmental offices or libraries and may be available for reference there.
University of Melbourne hard-copy theses are not available for loan. Instead they can be read in the Reading Room in the Baillieu Library. Requests for theses can be made online prior to visiting the reading room. To request material, please register and order here.
Increasingly, theses are freely available online: To search the collection either search the Library catalogue and click on the link 'connect to thesis' or search the Institutional Repository.
Access and Availability
As stated, University of Melbourne theses are not available for loan, but can be read in the Reading Room in the Baillieu Library.
Only theses written in the last ten years are held in the Baillieu Library. The remainder of the collection is held in off-site storage. Theses with the Location UniM Bund T on the library catalogue at held off site. Four working days notice is required for retrieval of material held off-site.

Researchers are permitted to undertake self-copying of material, according to the Reading Room copying policy.
External Thesis Requests
We accept requests from University, Government, Public or Special Libraries and private researchers within Australia and internationally for copies of whole theses. All requests for copies of material held at the University of Melbourne Library must comply with the Copyright Act of 1968.
- The request form/declaration is still required to be completed and sent to us.
- Copying of whole theses may take up to 5-6 weeks
- Theses are only delivered electronically via AARNET Cloudstor.
