Presented by the Faculty of Arts, and timed to align with The Grand Tour exhibition, this symposium celebrates the career of one of Australia’s most eminent curators, Terence Lane OAM.

During his long career at the National Gallery of Victoria, Terence Lane was instrumental in shaping the collection. He also played a significant role in heritage conservation, consulting on the restoration of several important historic houses. Embodying the idea of the scholar-curator, Lane was widely esteemed for his unparalleled knowledge of art and design. Lane's gift of 96 prints and drawings forms the basis of The Grand Tour, currently on display in the Noel Shaw Gallery.

A group of leading academics and curators who were friends and colleagues of Terence Lane will present papers reflecting his many interests and achievements during his lifetime in a symposium that will honour his lasting legacy. Symposium speakers include Tim Bonyhady, James Broadbent, Alisa Bunbury, Jane Clark, Amanda Dunsmore, Kirsty Grant, Alison Inglis, Matthew Martin, Christopher Menz, Diana Morgan, Michael Varcoe-Cocks and Gerard Vaughan.
