Collection Pop-Up: Saving sounds - 900 years of music in 10 items

Join curator Jen Hill as she introduces ten items from the Rare Music collection spanning almost 900 years. The core of the collection exists because of the impetus to 'save sound', so that it can be played or heard again and again. Jen will look at the different ways each item does this, from a manuscript leaf dated c. 1075; to printed music for a French baroque-era bagpipe; to an Australian-made and played piano roll from the jazz-age. Some of the collection items will be illustrated with brief audio extracts.
About the collection:
The Rare Music collection contains music manuscripts, printed scores, books, archival and other music-related material, including photographs and ephemera. It spans the late 11th century through to the present day, with a focus primarily on European art-music traditions and, to a lesser extent, on popular music. The collection's strengths are in early French, Italian and English music, instrumental methods and music and acoustic theory, as well as Australian Colonial and post-Federation music.
