Archives and Special Collections holds some beautiful examples of livres des artistes (artist books) from twentieth century Europe. Pierre Bonnard’s Parallelement, published by Ambroise Vollard in 1900, ushered in a new range of deluxe books illustrated by some of Europe’s top artists with text by significant writers. These books allowed artists a level of control over the production process, and resulted in some amazing collaborations.

On display will be Parler seul: Poème by Joan Miro and Tristan Zara; Poemes de Charles d’Orleans illustrated by Henri Matisse; Nocturn matinal by Antoni Tapies and Joan Brossa; 27 tableaux vivants (Robes-poèmes) by Sonia Delaunay and Blaise Cendras; Lithographs (Grasse album) by Jean Arp, Sonia Delaunay, Alberto Magnelli, Sophie Taeuber-Arp; and several copies of Derriére le Miroir and Verve.

This free public program forms part of our Collection Pop Up series. You can find upcoming Collection Pop Up events on our What's On page.
