Collection Pop Up: Rare Books

Aged book with illuminated text, spread open to two pages

Noel Shaw Gallery Level 1, Baillieu Library

Join Rare Books Curator, Susan Millard for a special behind the scenes viewing of early printed books from the collection.

The transition from hand written manuscripts to printed books in Europe was revolutionary. Johannes Gutenberg created metal moveable type in the 1450s in Mainz, Germany. His famous 42 line bible rolled off the press in 1455 and heralded a new era in the dissemination of information. The two forms co-existed for many years, but the ultimate efficiency of the printing press eventually won out. Books printed in this early era, up until 1500, are highly prized and the Baillieu Rare Books collection hold a small collection.

Collection items on view: Sarum Breviary, Gutenberg leaf, Nuremberg chronicle, Hortus Sanitatis

Bookings are encouraged but all are welcome to drop in to this session. The curator will meet attendees in the Noel Shaw Gallery, before heading beind the scenes to the Rare Book room.
