Join Archivist Melinda Barrie to view up close items from the University of Melbourne Archives. Hear first hand archival insights and have the opportunity to ask your questions about the collection items on display and careers in archives and records management.

Melinda will talk about UMA’s collecting of typewriters and office machines. In 1960 the first University Archivist, Frank Strahan, commenced eclectic and energetic collecting of University, business and community records. With his keen eye for exhibition material, he also collected the pictures from the walls of companies, office equipment such as typewriters and company seals, desk furniture and a huge range of memorabilia.

About the collection:

The University of Melbourne Archives (UMA) is one of Australia’s largest non-government research archives, with a collection of nearly 20km of records. Established in July 1960 to collect and preserve records relating to the University and to business and business people for the purposes of historical research, the UMA’s collecting has since expanded to include trade union and other labour history material and the records of professional, community, women's, peace and political organisations and individuals. The UMA collections provide a rich source for research in Victorian and Australian history.

Bookings are encouraged but all are welcome to drop in to this session.

This event is part of our Collection Pop-Up series. Look out for our upcoming events in March and April.
