Student Employment Programs

The University Library casually employs Student Library Assistants (SLAs) in a number of our libraries to assist with basic enquiries, shelving and handling of collection material, and provisions of peer assistance to students.

To be eligible to apply for a Student Library Assistant position, candidates must be enrolled as a current University of Melbourne student.

Cultural Collections Projects Program

The Cultural Collections Projects Program enables students, alumni and volunteers to work behind the scenes with the University's many cultural collections. See the Cultural Collections projects web page for details.

Library and Information Professional placements (TAFE or University)

The University of Melbourne Library offers ten-day work placements to students who are enrolled in ALIA-recognised library and information management courses and require a student placement as part of their course.

In 2026, a limited number of opportunities are available during the following times:

  • Monday 18 May – Friday 29 May
  • Monday 5 October – Friday 16 October

Please note that these dates are not able to be changed, and we are unable to offer placement opportunities outside of these dates.
