Intro to R pt. 4: Putting the R in aRt

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a graph is worth a thousand... data points? In this session, we will learn the ins and outs of data visualisation using ggplot2 and the oh so elegant Grammar of Graphics. By the end of this workshop you'll be able to make everything from quick and dirty plots for your own exploratory data analysis, all the way up to fancy-pants publication ready figures for your next Nature paper, you go-getter, you! This session builds on the previous Intro to R pt. 1, 2 & 3 workshops. If you were unable to attend these workshops, don't worry. You can still get up to speed by having a look at the corresponding online gitbook chapters (1-3) prior to the part 4 workshop.

Learning Objectives:

  • I know how to do a scatter plot and how to fit a line to the plot.
  • I understand know how to do a bar plot.
  • I can generate multiple plots using facet_grid.
  • I can improve the layout of my plot (e.g. add a title, change the theme).
  • I know how to save my plot into a file.
  • I know where to find help to make a plot with ggplot2.

Presenter

Jeremy Metha is a PhD candidate working between the Department of Finance and Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Melbourne. His work investigates the neural and neurochemical correlates of decision making, integrating behavioural neuroscience techniques with genetic and pharmacological interventions and computational modelling. He is a passionate R and RStudio user and will talk at length of their virtues to anyone willing to listen, reader beware!

This workshop will be repeated six times (Streams A-F). We encourage you to register for all 4 workshops in the same stream to help create a cohort experience amongst fellow participants.
