Library FAQs

  • I have items out on loan and want to return them, how do I do this?

With all our libraries open from 1 March, automatic renewals of library items will now cease. You can renew your items and check the latest due date on your Borrowing Record. A grace period is being applied between 1 March to 12 April to allow you time to return your items, so you won't be fined during this period.

When returning items, please return any High Use material to its home library via the returns chute. All other returns can be returned to any of our libraries. If our libraries are closed, you can place items in the external returns chutes. Please note that it may take several days for your items to be removed from your borrowing record.

  • I would like to access an item from the Archives and Special Collections. How can I access these?

From 1 March 2021, the Reading Room will be open to all users to access Archives and Special Collections materials. The service will be provided by appointment only. The Reading Room will be open for two-hour appointments at 11am and 2pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Follow these steps to secure an appointment.

    1. To access the Archives and Special Collections in the Reading Room, make a request for materials through the Aeon system
    2. Reading Room staff will be in touch to advise on when your materials will be available and on how to make an appointment
    3. Before you return for your on-campus subject, to visit the Library or attend an in-person appointment, make sure you complete the necessary requirements. For more information, please visit the Coming to campus page.

You will only be able to view the material requested for the duration booked in the Reading Room. You may make multiple bookings, and your materials will be kept for you, but please note that in times of high demand, the number of slots requested by one user may be restricted.

  • I need help, how do I contact the library?

We are here and happy to help. Library services are available online and in person. You can speak to a librarian at the service desk or contact us for assistance via Library Chat or via email at library-enquiries@unimelb.edu.au.

You can also browse our self-help online resources including Library Guides and information on referencing.

  • I am unable to attend campus due to COVID restrictions. Can I still access library material?

If you are currently COVID impacted and cannot access campus due to home isolation or you are based overseas the library is still here to help. Comprehensive library services and resources are available online.

The Library can help provide access to the materials you need. To find out more, see our Source online and print materials page.

If you need assistance, contact us via Library Chat, Student IT Chat and other online services.

  • I am interested in BONUS+ and inter-library loans services. Are they available?

    Inter-library loans

Yes, we are filling loan and copy requests. Please submit a request via our request forms.

From March 1 you will need to come into a library to check out your requested loans when they arrive.

We are reliant on other libraries to supply requested materials. Restrictions on library services in Australia and overseas can affect our ability to fill requests.

    BONUS+

You will be able to request BONUS+ items again from March 1.

BONUS+ items can be requested in our online catalogue by clicking on the green BONUS+ icon.

  • I am having IT trouble. Where can I get help?

Visit the Student IT website to find guides and support for accounts, software, Wi-Fi, printing and scanning, VPNs, studying remotely, and more.

Contact the Student IT team online for further support via chat or to open a support request.

  • I am not a current University of Melbourne staff or student. Can I visit the library?

From 1 March, our spaces will be open to the public, including our Alumni members, University of Divinity library members and borrowers from other Universities and TAFEs.
