In-text citation style notes

  • In the text citation, use a few words of the title, or the whole title if it is short, in place of an author's name.
  • In the in-text citation, if pages are being directly referenced, include the page number/s after the year.
  • When the author of a work is described as "Anonymous", "Anonymous" takes the place of the author name in the citation.

Reference list style notes

  • APA 7 Publication Manual, p. 284, 289
  • A reference normally has four elements: author, date, title, and source.
  • When one of these elements are missing, the reference list entry needs to be adapted or adjusted.
  • When the author of a work is unknown or cannot reasonably be determined, move the title to the author position, before the date of publication.
  • If the author is specifically designated as "Anonymous" cite in-text as (Anonymous, Year of publication) and in the Reference List use Anonymous as the author.
  • Before treating a work as though it has no author, consider whether a group or organisation is the author.
  • Book titles are italicised.
  • Capitalisation: Capitalise only the first word of the title and of the subtitle, if any, and any proper nouns.
  • Details about edition, volume number or chapter page range are placed in parentheses directly after the title, with the period after the parentheses, e.g., (2nd ed.). or (Rev. ed.). or (Vol. 26).
  • Where the reference entry has no author, alphabetise the entry by the first significant word in the title (i.e., ignoring any stop words such as 'a','an', and 'The'). Alphabetise numerals as though they were spelled out (e.g., 22 - as though it were "twenty-two").
