Style notes for this reference type

  • Book titles are italicised.
  • Capitalisation – capitalise all words of the title, except articles (the, a, an), conjunctions (and, but) and prepositions (on, with, before).
  • Edition numbers are placed after the publisher name and before the year (within the brackets).
  • Reverse the first name and surname order in the bibliography for the first named author only.
  • For three authors or fewer, use all author names. For more than three authors, use the first author name and ‘et al’. See Rule 4.1.2.
  • eBooks are cited in the same way as print books.
  • Subsequent references to secondary sources generally use the author’s surname to help identify the source. When author surnames aren’t suitable, or the author is not a person, short titles can be added to initial references to help with cross referencing. See Rules 1.4 and 1.4.4 for guidance on subsequent references and short titles.
