Open Access 101

Open Access Week 2020 Poster

You hit a paywall of $30 for a journal article, the link to a report results in a 404, you want to read a chapter from a book that isn’t in a nearby library.

Access to research is a real problem, particularly for practitioners, policy makers and researchers at underfunded institutions. This Open Access Week, find out how you can ensure wider access to your research through sharing preprints, exploring new publishing outlets and depositing in an open access repository.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop you will:

  • Be able to define open access (OA)
  • Understand the benefits and limitations of each type of open access publishing option
  • Have identified key open access funder policies and understand their effect on your research
  • Know how to deposit in the institutional repository, Minerva Access

Do you already know a lot about OA? You’re still welcome to join our discussion. Simply register and drop in during the last 15mins for the Q&A.

Presenter: Dimity Flanagan (Manager, Scholarly Communications) is responsible for promoting open scholarship at the University in order to ensure University of Melbourne research is disseminated as widely as possible.
