The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

United Kingdom requests: I declare that: I have not previously been supplied with a copy of the same material by you or any other librarian; I will use the copy ONLY for research for a non-commercial purpose, or private study, and will not supply a copy of it to any other person; to the best of my knowledge no other person with whom I work or study has made or intends to make, at or about the same time as this request, a request for substantially the same material for substantially the same purpose. I understand that if the declaration is false in a material particular, the copy supplied to me will be an infringing copy and that I shall be liable for infringement of copyright as if I had made the copy myself.

Australian requests: I declare, and give a warranty, that the copy/ies requested by me:

  1. are required only for the purpose of my research or study;
  2. will not be used for any other purpose;
  3. will not be used in a manner to infringe another’s rights at law or otherwise; and
  4. have not been previously supplied to me by any Australian library.

New Zealand requests: This copy is made for your private study or for your research. The Copyright Act 1994 prohibits the sale, letting for hire or copying of this copy.
