Friends of the Baillieu Library

The University of Melbourne Library has a long history of support by friends since George McArthur gave his outstanding collection to the University over 100 years ago. This was the Library's first major bequest.

Since then, the Library has received many gifts, including works from collectors' own libraries and bequests or donations which have allowed it to acquire many outstanding publications.

The Friends of the Baillieu Library actively contribute to the development and accessibility of the Library’s Special Collections through the purchase of notable works and the funding of conservation and digitisation projects.

Benefits

There are good reasons for joining the Friends:

  • A programme of special events throughout the year, including visits to libraries and other cultural facilities and a lecture series (online and possibly in person in 2024)
  • Priority invitations to the Library’s exhibition openings and associated events;
  • Newsletter about collections
