About
Thanks to all the coders, creative thinkers, and communicators who were part of the Researcher@Library hack day for social good. The hackathon gave us the chance to explore, visualise, map and connect a rich collection of social data from library and government including Find and Connect, AURIN, Australian Women's Register and Trove.
Prizes were donated by the University of Melbourne Library and Find & Connect. Keeping with the social good theme, these were awarded to the charity of the winner's choice.

Datasets
Find & Connect
The Find & Connect web resource brings together historical resources relating to institutional care within Australia, to enable people who spent time in out-of-home care as children to understand more about their past and about the historical context of child welfare.
The site is created from 9 separate databases with one for each state and territory plus the Commonwealth of Australia. These databases include entity records for organisations (e.g. orphanages, children’s homes), legislation, events, glossary terms, archival resources, and additional record types for publications and digital objects.
The data will be made available for the Hackathon as XML documents using the EAC-CPF schema. To get a sense of the data you can visit the Find & Connect website, have a look at us on HuNI or read over our data explainer, which highlights key information that will help you use and understand the Find & Connect data. Documentation and EAC files will also be available from our GitHub repository.
Find & Connect will be sponsoring a prize for people who use their data set. For some inspiration, Find & Connect challenges include:
* Search - Build us a new search!
* Map - Create a location based discovery tool for the site. The dataset includes street addresses for Homes but not latitudes & longitudes so you’ll need to convert this data.
* Dossier – Design an application for people to collate information from multiple parts of the website in one place.
The Australian Women's Register
The searchable online Australian Women's Register is a valuable and growing source of biographical data about Australian women and their organisations, with links to the archival repositories and libraries where their records are held and to other sources of information.
The site is created from a single database, with entity records for women and organisations and additional record types for archival resources, publications and digital objects. The data will be made available for the Hackathon as XML documents using the EAC-CPF schema.

The Australian Women's Register challenge is to make it easier for the site to interact with Wikipedia. One approach could be through the generation of citations on individual pages that are 'Wiki-ready' for reference
AURIN
AURIN is a national e-research infrastructure that empowers urban researchers, planners and policy makers to transform Australia’s urban settlements for the better. Urban systems are complex. Understanding how they function and supporting decisions on planning for their future development is crucial.
The AURIN Workbench and its flagship applications, the AURIN Portal and AURIN Map, are delivering free access to thousands of data sets from multiple sources that are spatially enabled and research-ready, and the analytical tools to interrogate and visualise this data. We streamline access to health, transport, housing, economic, land use, demographic, and a stack of other data— all integrated to work together.
Researchers, governments and industry are then able to generate meaningful knowledge – urban intelligence – the evidence base for informed decisions for the smart growth and the sustainable development of Australia’s cities and towns.

Other Datasets
We encourage teams to use other data sets. Some suggestions would be Trove, which has a well documented API. Other data sets can be found on the Victorian Data portal and the Australian Data portal. We just ask that you check the conditions of use to make sure that you are allowed to use the data for your intended purpose.
