G.W.L. Marshall-Hall was the first Ormond Professor of Music at the University of Melbourne. In 1892 he founded the Marshall-Hall Orchestra, conducting the majority of its 111 concerts and many others with visitors such as Melba and Mark Hambourg before the orchestra disbanded in 1912. This unique collection of the orchestra’s programmes details the development of its repertoire from the standard fare of Beethoven and Brahms to modern works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Debussy, including commentary on the works by Marshall-Hall himself.
