Based upon the original University of Melbourne library collections, the BX Collection is a general collection of non-Australian books and journals. All material from the open-shelf collections published before 1881 have been placed here. Some special strengths within the collection are:
French Revolution Material
A list of some of these pamphlets is available.
See French revolution pamphlets contents lists, Melbourne: Baillieu Library, 1962.
Facsimiles of Medieval Manuscripts
Over 250 volumes of fine facsimiles scattered over a large number of Dewey classes.
Botany Rare Books
Many of these books were formerly housed as the Botany Rare Book collection in the Botany Library. The European material has been integrated into the BX collection, while the Australian material has been housed in the Australiana collection. This Collection is especially rich in 18th century Botanical books, particularly in the area of gardening.
Access and Availability
Most of the BX collection is catalogued online, however some portions can only be accessed through the card catalogue, located in the basement of the Baillieu Library.
Material from this collection can be accessed through the Cultural Collections Reading room in the Baillieu Library. Requests for material can be made online prior to visiting the reading room. To request material, please use our online request form.
